Embark on an adventure with a billion star rating.

Experience a breathtaking day trip from Queenstown to Aoraki Mt Cook National Park, travelling through some of the South Island’s most striking alpine scenery. With time to explore Mt Cook Village at your own pace, this tour offers a relaxed way to enjoy local walks, scenic flights, or simply take in the landscape.

Itinerary

Your day begins with a morning pick up from or near your Queenstown accommodation. Travelling in a premium Mercedes van designed for small-group touring, the journey starts in comfort as you leave Queenstown behind and head north towards Aoraki Mt Cook.

The first part of the drive takes you through the Central Otago wine region, passing through Gibbston and Cromwell. This stretch sets the tone for the day, with wide open landscapes, rocky hills, and changing scenery that make the road trip just as enjoyable as the destination.

Crossing Lindis Pass brings a clear shift in the landscape. The road winds through tussock-covered hills and open country, offering one of the most scenic parts of the journey as you leave Central Otago behind and head further into the alpine South Island.

A brief stop in Omarama gives you the chance to stretch your legs, grab refreshments, and purchase lunch before continuing on. This is especially useful for guests planning to walk, join a scenic flight, or take part in one of the optional activities in Mt Cook Village

As the tour enters Mackenzie Country, the scenery opens up again and the bright blue waters of Lake Pukaki come into view. Following the lake towards Mt Cook Village is one of the visual highlights of the day, with Aoraki Mt Cook often appearing ahead in the distance.

Arriving at around midday, you will have approximately 3.5 hours to explore Mt Cook Village at your own pace. You may choose to enjoy one of the local self-guided walks, take a scenic ski plane or helicopter flight, join the seasonal Glacier Explorers experience, or spend time in the village itself. Entry to the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre is included for Altitude Tours guests. Please note that optional activities are at an additional cost and are subject to availability, weather, and season.

At approximately 3:30pm, rejoin your guide and begin the return journey to Queenstown. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the drive south, with the day finishing as comfortably as it began. Over the course of around 12 hours, this tour gives you the chance to see Aoraki Mt Cook in a way that feels both well-paced and rewarding.

Great Day! We had a wonderful day with our tour guide Chelsea. She is very caring and knowledgable. The weather turned out perfectly as we finished the walking track. Highly recommended the tour from Altitude as I had two tours with them. Both of them are fantastic!

Breathtakingly Beautiful! From start to finish, this tour was awesome! Tommy, our tour guide, was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. I learnt so much. The 10km Hooker Valley Trail was breathtaking but you MUST bring shoes with a grip! Don’t wear UGGS or trainers like I saw a lot of people wearing! Stunning scenery, highly recommend. If you only have one trip booked for your stay in NZ, I would recommend this one!

The views were amazing, the stops along the way quaint and the Hooker Valley Hike was so worth it. Shaun our guide was very good with lots of interesting facts and anecdotes to keep you entertained along the way.
